aRCUS Limited. a Turner Morrison group company, is mulling the induction of
some equity partners only after the launch of three Arcus home and building
stores. The retail company had earlier announced its plans to invest Rs. 100
crore in the setting up of 10 outlets in the next three years.
aRCUS Limited, a company incorporated in India, is going to completely
change the way a home is built or refurbished by setting up a chain of
one-stop shops for selling all one needs to build or improve a home. This
concept is aimed at meeting the basic needs of the customer - all one needs,
at one place, at a reliable price & of assured quality
The Challenge
Due lot of on-going issues of Internet based application like Email
application as well as the changing need of Intranet/Internet Applications the
organization's IT team had to give a very serious thoughts how to go about .
They evaluated Linux and found that is the platform which will not only take
care of their present issues but also so scalable to take care their future
needs without much botheration of upgradation and migration.
The Solution
Major challenge was to integrate and migration of the server to linux
platform that too on a single server environment. Solution on open source
platform was given and deployed at aRCUS. Email server based on Sendmail
having smtp /pop3/web protocols was one of the crucial application migrated
. Other services like application / Web proxy on Squid , Firewall/NAT on
IPTABLES , VPN on FREESwan , VOIP on SIP , File and print services on SAMBA
was implemented .

By building on foundation of Linux based servers, aRCUS been able to take
advantage of all the knowledge and all the processes they developed over the
years. That was key for aRCUS to get the new solution up and running quickly
and to keep theTotal cost of operation low."
In addition to a rapid return on its investment, the Linux based solution
gave aRCUS a robust infrastructure that will support the company's future
growth. The beauty of it was that Linux already had everything which needed to
expand the business across the country. aRCUS were able to quickly capitalize
on a market opportunity, which gave them a brand new revenue source with
almost nil incremental cost.
